Iris Giclée prints by Rebecca Wilkinson
Rebecca Wilkinson was born in Columbus, Ohio, but grew up in Florida on a cypress lake teeming with interesting fauna, and overgrown with lush subtropical flora. Her fascination in painting microcosms of the natural world can be traced to this early experience, while her passion for travel has taken her far afield to such exotic locations as Japan, Eastern Europe and the jungles of Central America. She began her painting career at age nine, encouraged and instructed by her artist father.
Attending Boston University as an undergraduate, she majored in Soviet and East European Studies, later earning a Master's degree in International Affairs from Columbia University. Recently, she has retired from a 23-year career in teaching art, from international schools in Warsaw and Amsterdam to American public schools. Since 1985, she has studied fine art at the Metropolitan State College of Denver, where she pursued her interest in oriental languages, culture, and philosophy.
The recipient of numerous awards and grants, Rebecca's works have been accepted in juried art shows across the nation. Now settled with her husband in a loft in the River Market district of Kansas City, Rebecca paints full time in watercolor and oils, but finds the translucent quality of watercolor more rewarding.
"The inspiration for my floral pieces spring from my abiding delight in the essential process of growth. The intent for my Giclée collages is to create the illusion of plant life so luxurious that it literally bursts from the picture plane. Using a second print, I cut out leaves and blossoms, retouch them along their edges with watercolor, and attach them outside the first image onto the mat. It is an effect that is part trompe-l'oeil, part actual 3-d."
