Iris Giclée prints by Denise Allen
Approximately 20 years ago, folk artist and master craftswoman Denise Allen discovered the wonderful world of needlework. Although she has never taken an art or sewing lesson, she has been nationally and internationally recognized as "The High Priestess of Needlework."
Combining her art and needlework skills, Ms. Allen has produced a unique and appealing folk art series of 3-D tapestries, collages and quilts. Some of the works address historical topics, for example, slavery in 19th century America. Other works are more personal, and recall life in simpler times, depicting traditional domestic chores such as cooking (the black pot-bellied stove is featured in most of the works) sewing, doing laundry, and caring for the family.
Ms. Allen's work has been widely exhibited in an impressive number of Art Centers and galleries in the North East, and recognized in feature articles in several national magazines and newspapers.
Ms. Allen was born and raised in Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, New York. She and her husband now reside in Woodside, Queens with their lovely 13-year-old daughter, Chiffon.
About her art: "I work on my art when I feel like it and I don't plan my pieces out. When I start working, I get inspired and one thing leads to another."
